Who’s feeling me on this one?! “I want results but I hate working out!”

 

January is usually the time when people throw around New Year’s resolutions with the intention of getting fit and fab in no time at all. If we’re honest, Vic and I are too.

 

At the very top of our list is dropping the kilos that we stacked on at the end of 2016 when Vic had her cancer scare. Now the big C has been kicked to the kerb, it’s time to STOP the emotional eating and drinking and get back into tiptop shape. Which we know we can do! We’ve done it before and we’ll do it again.

 

If you’re anything like us, when you want to drop some weight you sometimes turn to those ‘trusty’ women’s fitness magazines for some fitspo. You open up the glossy pages of photoshopped abs and spot one of those ten-minute workout double page spreads. “Perfect!” you exclaim, “I could totally smash out a 10- minute workout each day. Sign me up!”

 

Us too.

 

But the minute you close the magazine, any chance of you actually doing those exercises in your lounge room every day goes out the window! The dilemma remains.

 

I want results but I HATE working out. What do I do?

 

If you find regular gyms intimidating, we totally get where you’re coming from. Vic recently signed up to try an online weight-training program to mix up her training a bit. The moment she stepped foot in our local gym to give it a go, she walked straight out again. Big muscly guys hanging around the free weights, machines that look like they need an instruction manual to operate them and sweaty bodies grunting all over the place. No thanks!

 

The good news is, we’ve found a few ways to exercise that takes the dread out of it for us. We hope that some of these ideas will help you find a happy place when it comes to exercising. Moving your body is an important part of staying healthy. Especially if you have a job which means you’re sitting down for 8+ hours a day!

 

Here are our top 3 most enjoyable ways to work out…

 

1. Walk 10,000 steps per day

When we first gave up alcohol for 12 months, we found ourselves with a bunch of extra time on our hands! We weren’t quite ready to hit the gym so we eased ourselves into exercising by setting ourselves a goal to walk 10,000 steps every single day. This works out to be around five kilometres in total and is very achievable for most people, regardless of fitness level.

 

The idea behind walking 10,000 steps a day originated in Japan where they discovered that they would be healthier as a population by increasing their daily activity from 3500-5000 steps a day to 10,000 steps a day. Simply by doing this alone, you’ll burn around 20% of your caloric intake. Some ideas on how to get your steps in include taking the stairs instead of the elevator, taking a 10 minute walk around the block at lunch time, walking to work instead of getting the bus or train or doing a few laps of your local footy pitch to get your steps in for the day. We stuck to this every day for three months and it made a massive difference to our attitude towards exercise no to mention our waistline. It even gave us a chance to discover a heap of new spots around our local neighbourhood too!

 

How to Track My Steps?

There are a bunch of free Apps that you can download on your smart phone to help monitor your daily steps. We use Argus which has a simple interface and is super easy to use.

 


2. F45…team training, life changing!

When we felt ready to take things up a notch with our exercise routine, we shopped around a few different gyms to see what was out there. We’d done the whole cheap and cheerful Anytime Fitness thing and had hated it! Surprise surprise.

 

We wanted something fun that would keep us interested and that didn’t feel like a chore. We’d just moved to a new suburb and Vic was super keen to get back into group fitness training. She’d done that before and had experienced great results. I on the other hand wasn’t so keen.

 

But, luckily for us, one of our mates owned the local F45 in Surry Hills so we figured we’d give their free week trial a go before we looked for other options. There was no way in a million years I thought we would join…but after our first couple of sessions I was hooked! 45 minutes of either cardio or weight training, interval timing so you don’t get bored, it was awesome.

 

Since then, F45 has been our go to for exercise. We don’t have to think about it, no workout is ever the same so there’s no chance you’ll get bored, the vibe is great, it’s FUN and it’s quick! Plus, each session the trainers give clear demonstrations of how to complete each exercise, so you don’t feel like a total bozo like we did in a normal gym! We’ve also made a bunch of new friends that we get to train with every day too.

3. Move your body, try a new activity

Squash, surfing, rock climbing, snowboarding, yoga, hiking, swimming. When we want to mix it up we’ll throw a couple of these activities into the mix. Heading out for a surf doesn’t even feel like exercise!

 

Getting competitive and sweaty on the squash court is great for a bit of healthy competition. Except when I beat Victoria too many times in a row…then she can get a little bit cranky! 😉

 

Why not challenge yourself in 2017 to try at least 2 new activities each month and you’ll soon have heaps of different ways to stay active without feeling like you want to stick pins in your eyes. Check out sites like Groupon to find new activities to try for a discounted price!

 

There are so many things you can do that don’t cost the earth too. Going out for a hike, sprints on the beach, walking your dog, or jumping in the ocean for a swim don’t cost a cent! Err… did I just suggest beach sprints?! WTF that sounds horrible!
